What is the purpose of life?

God's original purpose for mankind was stated in Genesis 1:28:

“Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth and subdue it, and have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving upon the earth.”

God created us with both the physical and the intellectual capacity to fulfill his purpose. He wants us to enjoy life, to learn about Him and His ways and to gain an understanding as to why it is simply best for us to follow His guidelines and principles as outlined in His Word.

A few of the wisest ones in the Bible made mention of this. Wise King Solomon pondered the meaning of life and concluded:

"The conclusion of the matter, everything having been heard, is: Fear the [true] God and keep his commandments. For this is the whole [obligation] of man." (Eccl. 12:13)

Speaking of commandments, Jesus was once asked what was the greatest commandment in the Law. Jesus said that the greatest and first commandment was that you must love God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind. And the second was, "‘You must love your neighbor as yourself." (Mt. 22:37-39)

"He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8) RSV
